Trusculpt® by Cutera ®is a new generation device for non-invasive, nonsurgical fat reduction.
Using monopolar RF (radiofrequency), this device permanently destroys fat cells.
One advantage of TruSculpt® ID compared to other body sculpting procedures is that it is FDA-cleared to treat patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30, but it is not a weight-loss treatment. The best candidates are relatively fit and active, with areas of stubborn fat.
Using monopolar RF (radiofrequency), this device uses a hands-free system to permanently destroy fat cells. This radiofrequency body contouring device has earned FDA clearance for lipolysis. (otherwise known as fat destruction)
Up to 6 temperature-controlled handpieces are applied to the skin to maintain a temperature between 43°C and 44°C which allows for deep heating of the skin without damaging the epidermis (surface of the skin).
The fat is heated until the cells are destroyed. Patients note the treatment feels like a warming hot stone massage, and it will not cause any damage to the skin. The destroyed fat cells are naturally removed from the body through the lymphatic system and treated as waste.
The amount of fat reduction ranges between 16-36% in the treated area in a single treatment.
Therefore, the average amount of fat reduction per treatment will be up to 25% which is comparable or superior to other fat removal devices on the market.
All areas of the body can be treated.
These include:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Arms
- Thighs
- Knees
- Chin – Submental area
Unlike Coolsculpting® or other cryolipolysis devices, this device does not require a vacuum or a suction device for the fat to be inserted into. As a result, there are fewer side effects such as frostbite, numbness, anaesthesia, dysesthesia, and pain associated with the freezing of the fat.
There are no reported incidents of paradoxical fat production. There also is no risk for skin necrosis due to frostbite, as has been shown with cryolipolysis.
There is no need to massage the area with the Trusculpt® ID technology and as such there is no pain post procedure.
Unlike Coolsculpting® that requires “grabbable” fat to treat an area, this device does NOT require the patient to have “grabbable fat.” Therefore, smaller pockets of fat can also be treated with this fat reducing technology.
Another advantage of TruSculpt® ID over other body sculpting procedures is that it is FDA-cleared to treat patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30, but it’s not a weight-loss treatment.
Clinical trials also suggest that the treatment is more effective than Coolsculpting® as well as other heat based devices for fat reduction on the market.
The best candidates are relatively fit and active, with areas of stubborn fat.
Since this device uses heat, a gentle sensation of heat is felt during the treatment.
TruSculpt can result in minimal discomfort and the intensity can be adjusted to reduce any pain one might experience..
The duration of a treatment for an area is about 15 minutes.
Since this device uses heat, you can experience transient erythema or redness after the treatment. This usually lasts for a couple of hours but no longer than a day. Some patients may experience mild tenderness at the procedure site.
Palpable nodules that are tender to touch or lumps in the treatment area may develop in the treated area up to 72 hours following treatment and typically resolve over several weeks.
There have been no other reported adverse events with this technology in the epidermis or dermis after the treatment.
In addition, there are no restrictions and no downtime with this treatment. You can resume your usual activity post treatment.
You can get multiple areas treated at one time. The number of treatments depends on your goals and the amount of fat in the areas to be treated. If you need more than one treatment in an area, wait eight weeks in between treatments.
Depending on the amount of fat reduction desired, 2 or 3 sessions may be required.
However, results can be seen in a single session. Results are usually visible at the 3-month mark.
TruSculpt® ID technology burns away your fat areas and tightens your skin at the same time. Research shows that only radio frequency technology can tighten skin tissues during body sculpting unless you undergo an invasive surgical procedure.
What are the contraindications to using this device?
Since this device use electricity, patients with a pacemaker or a defibrillator cannot use the device.
Contraindications include:
- Active infection at the site of treatment
- Active cancer
- Pregnancy or nursing
- Pacemaker, defibrillator
While eliminated fat cells are gone for good, if a healthy and stable weight is not maintained, the remaining fat cells can expand over time, changing your body contour once again. Your results will last if you can maintain muscle mass and strength with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Any weight gain will be in other areas or in the existing fat that did not undergo lipolysis. Most people will need a maintenance treatment every 12 months.
Anyone who wants to reduce some body fat is a candidate for this treatment.
